David Birnie was an Australian serial killer who, along with his wife Catherine Birnie, murdered four young women in Perth, Western Australia in 1986. Born in 1951, Birnie had a troubled childhood, experiencing abuse and neglect. He met Catherine in the early 1980s and the pair quickly formed a toxic and abusive relationship.
The couple abducted, raped, and murdered their victims, burying their bodies in the backyard of their house. Their crimes shocked and horrified the community, leading to one of the largest manhunts in Australian history. They were eventually caught and sentenced to life in prison.
David Birnie committed suicide in his prison cell in 2005, marking the end of a reign of terror that had left a lasting impact on the Australian public. The Birnie case remains one of the most infamous and disturbing in Australian criminal history.
